Two quakes in the same region in a day - coincidence?
So much activity in the same portion of the world, how unusual is something like this, and could they be related?
According to CNN meteorologist and weather producer Brandon Miller this is certainly not unprecedented as far as tropical systems go. "September represents the peak of tropical activity around the world, and the Western Pacific sees more tropical cyclones each year than anywhere on the globe, so even having four systems active at the same time is not incredibly unusual," he said.
Perhaps the more intriguing events are the two major earthquakes; the 8.0 magnitude near Samoa Tuesday followed by the 7.6 magnitude in western Indonesia.
The epicenters of the two tremors are about 4,700 miles (7,600 km) apart, but the U.S. Geological Survey has declined to say whether the two quakes were linked
Miller said: "We only see between five and 10 earthquakes of this magnitude on average around the globe each year, so to see them in the same general region within 18 hours seems to be quite a coincidence."
The earth is covered with a relatively thin set of tectonic plates that make up the outer shell of the planet -- known as the lithosphere. The plates are all connected and constantly moving, creating pressure and tension along their boundaries. Earthquakes occur when this tension reaches a critical maximum, and similar to a rubber band that has been stretched to its limits, it will snap.
"It seems to reason that a large earthquake in one location could provide the extra force needed in another nearby location, to stretch that rubber band to the breaking point, thus triggering another earthquake," Miller said.
Another piece to the puzzle -- both of these earthquakes occurred along opposite ends of the same tectonic plate, the Australian plate. The Australian plate borders the Pacific plate to the East (the Samoan quake occurred along this boundary), while on the Western side, it borders the Eurasian plate (where the Indonesia quake occurred).
Several of these plates surround the Pacific Ocean basin forming an arc of quake sites and active volcanoes known as the "Ring of Fire." This ring is actually a 40,000 km horseshoe shape, where most of the Earth's active volcanoes above sea level and most of the world's earthquakes are located.
So did the Samoan quake help to trigger the Indonesian quake?
"While we cannot say for sure, it does seem plausible," said Miller. "Scientists will certainly study these events and try to find any connection that could tie them together, with the ultimate goal of some day being able to provide warnings ahead of these deadly earthquakes."
The biggest earthquake ever measured -- magnitude 9.5 -- occurred within the ring along the coast of Chile. It created a tsunami that killed around 2,000 people, before it radiated outwards, killing 61 people in Hawaii and 122 in Japan.

In December 2004, an earthquake measuring at least 9.0 struck off the coast of the northern tip of Indonesia's Sumatra island, triggering a major tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed more than 200,000 people in 11 countries. The impact on Indonesia, Thailand and Sri Lanka was particularly devastating.
The most famous volcanic eruption in recent history was Krakatoa, Indonesia in August, 1883. It generated 40-meter tsunamis that smashed into islands nearby, destroying hundreds of villages and killing tens of thousands of people

Efficient Coincidence
The woman works for a telephone company and had called the first number she found with an address in our building. Our Company's name begins with O, so it is certainly not the first one listed, and she had the wrong building. Despit all that, I was able to give her the cell phone number of the very person she was looking for. Quite a coincidence, but it made me feel VERY efficient!
Father Time
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I chased the Rabbit from Alice In Wonderland on Easter morning, a Pooka, when I was Twelve years old in 1963, which was the same year that Kennedy died in that had all the Coincidences between him and Lincoln.
I was born in 1951 the Year of the Rabbit, the same year that Synchronicity was given it's deffinition! Look it up on wikapedia! That was the same year Alice In Wonderland was made by Disney. It was also the year Harvey was released in more Countries than the year it was made which was 1950.
I have a web site called SynchrinicityInWonderland.com you can read there what happen to me in 1963. You can also go to Google and type in Synchronicity Rabbits and I will be the first thing that comes up. You can also go to the project wonderland cronicles just under that and you'll read about me again.
You can also go to SynchronicityStories.net Where you'll find that the onner of the site also thinks he saw the Rabbit when he was 7 or 8 years old.
This is going to take me days to explain even a fraction of the synchronites I have lived through so give me time to explain it all there is alot to digest!
I own a business called White Pond Drive Thru. I sell Ohio Lottery tickets there. Last week on 08/07/09 the day I found out Steven Spielberg was doing a remake to Harvey the guy that sees the Invisible Rabbit the number that night on the pick 4 was 1951. I hit that pick 4 a few years ago I was driving down the road to go get my cell phone fixed which my last four numbers are 1951. I was following a Semi Truck with big numbers on the back of it that was 1951 and the date was 5/1 I played that number that night and hit it in the box for $400.00.
Your going to find out that my story will prove once and for All that Synchronicity is not only real but Father Times way of showing itself! And he used a Rabbit and a Pocket Watch to do so!
Even where I live there is a restaurant called the Bunny Which has a big tall Rabbit Sign out front. That was built the year I moved to Copley OH in 1959. The place is now called Charlies which is the same name where Elwood P Dowed goes to to have a drink and hang out with Harvey. My Uncle Charles lived in Wadsworth OH, where I spent many summers farming My nephew lives with my mom and dad his name is Charlie also. He was named after my Uncle So I guess you could say that where I grew up at is Charlies place also! Which is right beside Black Pond. My Business is at the top of my parents road Lakeland Ave. which is across from White Pond. I guess I grew up living at the Yin and Yang Ponds with the Bunny right down the road!
There is a friend of mine who owns a Bar that I go to called The Nut House his name is Charlie Cook.
Twenty seven years ago we worked on machines next to each other at BF Goodrich in the Belt Room. It's funny another friend of mine that I've known for thirty some years has the first and last same name as Charlie and now there friends and he plays drums every Wednesday night at Charlies bar!
Synchronicity In Wonderland
Synchronicity In Wonderland will illustrate the concept of meaningful coincidence to a new level of understanding who we are in relationship to Time. I believe without a shadow of a doubt that Father Time is a friend of mine!
Father Time came to me in 1963 on Easter morning, in different hues of blue white holographic light energy, in the form of a Rabbit, dressed in a vest coat, holding a pocket watch. Yes, the Rabbit from Alice In Wonderland. It awakened me without saying a word. He kept repeatedly glancing at his watch then looking at me while standing in the hallway at my bedroom door. After a few moments he moved just out of my sight down the hallway. Overcome by curiosity I cautiously got out of bed and crept into the hallway. There he stood in his luminous blue light, looking at his watch then me. Eventually turning around and running down the hallway past my sisters bedroom to my parents room. All doors were closed so his only exit was to turn left at the end of the hallway into our living-room. It was all I could do to keep up with him as he sped across the room. Like a Genie disappearing into its lamp he vanished underneath the couch. At that same instant it was as if someone stuck their leg in front of me, tripped me, and I slid on my hands and face right up to the couch where the Easter Bunny disappeared. After I recovered from my fall I sat there pinching myself making sure I was not in a dream. It was early morning so I didn't even try to go back to bed. At that point in time I didn't mention my experience to anyone. I figured they would either laugh at me or think I was crazy.
THE RABBIT SENDS IN A LITTLE BILL
"It was much pleasanter at home,"
thought poor Alice
"when one wasn't always growing
larger and smaller
and being ordered about by mice and rabbits
I almost wish I hadn't gone down that
rabbit-hole-and yet-it's rather curious,
you know, this sort of life!
I do wonder what can have happen to me!
When I used to read fairy-tales,
I fancied that kind of thing never happened,
and now here I am in the middle of one!
There ought to be a book written about me,
that there ought!
And when I grow up, I'll write one-
but I'm grown up now,"
she added in a sorrowful tone,
"at least there's no room to grow up any more here."
The next close encounter happened on Easter morning 1964. I was awaken once-again, without a sound, by another approximately six foot Rabbit. This time it was a girl Rabbit. It had on a dress, was wearing bloomers with those frilly gatherings, and had a bonnet on with a daisy extending out of it. As I sat up in bed and observed, she just kept hopping at my doorway for quite some time before going down the hall.
I went into the hall and looked down it to see if it would be there like the one I chased the year before. It had disappeared altogether out of sight. I then went into the living-room and was remembering everything that had happen to me the year before. Finally after reminiscing what had happened I went back to bed and went to sleep.
At this point in time no one knew of any of my experiences. At breakfast the next morning would be the first synchronistic experience relating to the coming of the Easter Bunnies.
My sister Nancy while sitting at the breakfast table said, "Eugene your not going to believe, what I saw last night. I had a Rabbit dressed up like a girl at my bedroom door." I asked her, "and what did you do?" Nancy said, "I chased her into the living-room and she went underneath the couch and disappeared." I then asked Nancy to show me where the Rabbit went underneath the couch. We had two couches in the living-room and I wanted to make sure it was the same couch that I had seen mine go under the year before. It was the exact spot where I had chased the Rabbit one year prior. Also in the living-room were two of the largest Easter Baskets my sister and I had ever been given.
We then went back to the breakfast table. I then asked Nancy, "what did the Rabbit look like?" She said, "It had a dress on and had frilly like pantaloons." Then I said, "yes it had a bonnet on with a daisy sticking out of it didn't it." Nancy said, "how did you know?"
I explained I had seen her Rabbit that same night and had chased one myself one year earlier underneath the couch as she had.
THE POOL OF TEARS
After a time she heard a little pattering of feet in the distance,
and she hastily dried her eyes to see what was coming.
It was the White Rabbit returning, splendidly dressed, with
a pair of white kid gloves in one had and a large fan in the other:
he came trotting along in a great hurry, muttering to himself as he came,
"Oh the Duchess, the Duchess! Oh! won't she be savage if I've kept her waiting!"
Alice felt so desperate that she was ready to ask help of any one;
so when the Rabbit came near her, she began, in a low timid voice,
"If you please, sir-" The Rabbit started violently,
dropped the white kid gloves and the fan,
and scurried away into the darkness as hard as he could go.
Alice took up the fan and gloves, and, as the hall was very hot
she kept fanning herself all the time she went on talking:
"Dear, dear! How queer everything is today!
And yesterday things went on just as usual.
I wonder if I've been changed in the night?
Let me think: was I the same when I got up this morning?
I almost think I can remember feeling a little different.
But if I'm not the same, the next question is,
Who in the world am I?
"Ah, that's the great puzzle!"
And she began thinking over all the children she knew,
that were of the same age as herself,
to see if she would have been changed for any of them.
I live in Akron OHIO I Own The White Pond Drive Thru where I have Five good looking girls working for me and I sell the coldest beer in Akron. This is from the movie Harvey read it and see the coincendences relating to girls, cold beer, and Akron!
CHUMLEY - Is there anything I can do for

ELWOOD - What did you have in mind?
CHUMLEY - Mr. Dowd, what kind of a man are

CHUMLEY - And where on the face of this

- like him?
ELWOOD - You mean Harvey, the Pooka?
CHUMLEY - Yes - it's true - the things
you told me tonight. I know it now.
ELWOOD - Yes. Yes, Harvey has several very
interesting facets. Did I - uh - did I tell
you about Mrs. McElhinney?
CHUMLEY - No.
ELWOOD - Uh - she lives right next door to
us. Wonderful woman. Well, Harvey told me
last night that Mrs. McElhinney's Aunt
Rose --

Jung coined the word to describe what he called "temporally coincident occurrences of acausal events." Jung variously described synchronicity as an "acausal connecting principle", "meaningful coincidence" and "acausal parallelism". Jung introduced the concept as early as the 1920s but only gave a full statement of it in 1951 in an Eranos lecture[1] and in 1952, published a paper, Synchronicity - An Acausal Connecting Principle, in a volume with a related study by the physicist (and Nobel laureate) Wolfgang Pauli.[2]
This is also on the same page from Wikapedia
One of Jung's favourite quotes on synchronicity was from Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll, in which the White Queen says to Alice: "It's a poor sort of memory that only works backwards".[citation needed] [5][6]

Same year Disney did Alice In Wonderland. The Bunny Drive Inn is right

about a thousand more coincidences!
You can't stop the Rabbit because he is Father Time sure he wants to show himself one more time! So it' Speilberg turn to do it. Alice In Wonderland is also being remaked by Disney and will be released next year on March fifth. I also own White Pond Drive Thru in Akron OH my parrents have lived by Black Pond since 1959. This movie really should be being made about me the Real Elwood!
This next paragraph is what the person wrote when he published my story to SynchronicityStories.net
(Note to readers: Here's another synch for me. All my life I've, jokingly, told people that I don't believe in Santa or the tooth fairy but I do believe in the Easter Bunny because I saw it when I was a child. I was about 7 or 8 when it happened. I was asleep in bed when rustling noises woke me up. I turned to see what it was and saw a giant bunny, like an adult in a really good custume, hop out of my room. I've always felt that it was a half dream halucination, but after reading this I guess I'm not so sure now. I never mentioned it to my parents until years later and I never saw any signs that it was my parents who did it. Cool synch for me. :-) )

The 21st, a bad day for King Louis XVI
When King Louis XVI of France was a child, he was warned by an astrologer to always be on his guard on the 21st day of each month. Louis ws so terrified by this that he never did business on this day. Unfortunately Louis was not always on his guard. On June 21st 1791, following the French revolution, Louis and his queen were arrested in Varennes, whist trying to escape France. On September 21st 1791, France abolished the institution of Royalty and proclaimed itself a republic. Finally on January 21st 1793, King Louis XVI was executed by guillotine.

A writer's plum pudding
In 1805, French writer Émile Deschamps was treated to some plum pudding by the stranger Monsieur de Fortgibu. Ten years later, he encountered plum pudding on the menu of a Paris restaurant, and wanted to order some, but the waiter told him the last dish had already been served to another customer, who turned out to be de Fortgibu. Many years later in 1832 Émile Deschamps was at a diner, and was once again offered plum pudding. He recalled the earlier incident and told his friends that only de Fortgibu was missing to make the setting complete — and in the same instant the now senile de Fortgibu entered the room.

A writer, found the book of her childhood
While American novelist Anne Parrish was browsing bookstores in Paris in the 1920s, she came upon a book that was one of her childhood favorites - Jack Frost and Other Stories. She picked up the old book and showed it to her husband, telling him of the book she fondly remembered as a child. Her husband took the book, opened it, and on the flyleaf found the inscription: "Anne Parrish, 209 N. Weber Street, Colorado Springs." It was Anne's very own book. A novel that predicted the Titanic's destiny, and another ship that almost followed
Morgan Robertson, in 1898, wrote "Futility". It described the maiden voyage of a transatlantic luxury liner named the Titan. Although it was touted as being unsinkable, it strikes an iceberg and sinks with much loss of life. In 1912 the Titanic, a transatlantic luxury liner widely touted as unsinkable strikes an iceberg and sinks with great loss of life on her maiden voyage. In the Book, the Month of the Wreck was April, same as in the real event. There were 3,000 passengers on the book; in reality, 2,207. In the Book, there were 24 Lifeboats; in reality, 20.
Months after the Titanic sank, a tramp steamer was traveling through the foggy Atlantic with only a young boy on watch. It came into his head that it had been thereabouts that the Titanic had sunk, and he was suddenly terrified by the thought of the name of his ship - the Titanian. Panic-stricken, he sounded the warning. The ship stopped, just in time: a huge iceberg loomed out of the fog directly in their path. The Titanian was saved.

Twins brothers, same heart attack
John and Arthur Mowforth were twins who lived about 80 miles apart in Great Britain. On the evening of May 22, 1975, both fell severely ill from chest pains. The families of both men were completely unaware of the other's illness. Both men were rushed to separate hospitals at approximately the same time. And both died of heart attacks shortly after arrival. (Source: Chronogenetics: The Inheretance of Biological Time, Luigi Gedda and Gianni Brenci)

Two Mr. Brysons, same hotel room
While on a business trip sometime in the late 1950s, Mr. George D. Bryson stopped and registered at the Brown Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky. After signing the register and being given his key to room 307, he stopped by the mail desk to see if any letters had arrived for him. Indeed there was a letter, the mail girl told him, and handed him an envelope addressed to Mr. George D. Bryson, room 307. This wouldn't be so odd, except the letter was not for him, but for room 307's just-previous occupant - another man named George D. Bryson. (Source: Incredible Coincidence, Alan Vaughan)

Swapped Hotel Findings
In 1953, television reporter Irv Kupcinet was in London to cover the coronation of Ellizabeth II. In one of the drawers in his room at the Savoy he found found some items that, by their identification, belonged to a man named Harry Hannin. Coincidentally, Harry Hannin - a basketball star with the famed Harlem Globetrotters - was a good friend of Kupcinet's. But the story has yet another twist. Just two days later, and before he could tell Hannin of his lucky discovery, Kupcinet received a letter from Hannin. In the letter, Hannin told Kucinet that while staying at the Hotel Meurice in Paris, he found in a drawer a tie - with Kupcinet's name on it! (Source: Mysteries of the Unexplained)

A novel that unsuspectedly described the spy next door
When Norman Mailer began his novel Barbary Shore, there was no plan to have a Russian spy as a character. As he worked on it, he introduced a Russian spy in the U.S. as a minor character. As the work progressed, the spy became the dominant character in the novel. After the novel was completed, the U.S. Immigration Service arrested a man who lived just one floor above Mailer in the same apartment building. He was Colonel Rudolf Abel, alleged to be the top Russian spy working in the U.S. at that time. (Source: Science Digest)

Poker winnings, to the unsuspected son
In 1858, Robert Fallon was shot dead, an act of vengeance by those with whom he was playing poker. Fallon, they claimed, had won the $600 pot through cheating. With Fallon's seat empty and none of the other players willing to take the now-unlucky $600, they found a new player to take Fallon's place and staked him with the dead man's $600. By the time the police had arrived to investigate the killing, the new player had turned the $600 into $2,200 in winnings. The police demanded the original $600 to pass on to Fallon's next of kin - only to discover that the new player turned out to be Fallon's son, who had not seen his father in seven years! Three suicide attempts, all stopped by the same Monk
Joseph Aigner was a fairlly well-known portrait painter in 19th century Austria who, apparently, was quite an unhappy fellow: he several times attempted suicide. His first attempt was at the young age of 18 when he tried to hang himself, but was interrupted by the mysterious appearance of a Capuchin monk. At age 22 he again tried to hang himself, but was again saved from the act by the very same monk. Eight years later, his death was ordained by others who sentenced him to the gallows for his political activities. Once again, his life was saved by the intervention of the same monk. At age 68, Aiger finally succeeded in suicide, a pistol doing the trick. His funeral ceremony was conducted by the same Capuchin monk - a man whose name Aiger never even knew. Twin brothers, killed on the same road, two hours apart
On 2002, Seventy-year-old twin brothers have died within hours of one another after separate accidents on the same road in northern Finland. The first of the twins died when he was hit by a lorry while riding his bike in Raahe, 600 kilometres north of the capital, Helsinki. He died just 1.5km from the spot where his brother was killed. "This is simply a historic coincidence. Although the road is a busy one, accidents don't occur every day," police officer Marja-Leena Huhtala told Reuters. "It made my hair stand on end when I heard the two were brothers, and identical twins at that. It came to mind that perhaps someone from upstairs had a say in this," she said. (Source: BBC News)

Just like Edgar Allan Poe's book
In the 19th century, the famous horror writer, Egdar Allan Poe, wrote a book called 'The narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym'. It was about four survivors of a shipwreck who were in an open boat for many days before they decided to kill and eat the cabin boy whose name was Richard Parker. Some years later, in 1884, the yawl, Mignonette, foundered, with only four survivors, who were in an open boat for many days. Eventully the three senior members of the crew, killed and ate the cabin boy. The name of the cabin boy was Richard Parker.

Twin Boys, twin lives
The stories of identical twins' nearly identical lives are often astonishing, but perhaps none more so than those of identical twins born in Ohio. The twin boys were separated at birth, being adopted by different families. Unknown to each other, both families named the boys James. And here the coincidences just begin. Both James grew up not even knowing of the other, yet both sought law-enforcement training, both had abilities in mechanical drawing and carpentry, and each had married women named Linda. They both had sons whom one named James Alan and the other named James Allan. The twin brothers also divorced their wives and married other women - both named Betty. And they both owned dogs which they named Toy. Forty years after their childhood separation, the two men were reunited to share their amazingly similar lives. (Source: Reader's Digest, January 1980)

A bullet that reached its destiny years later
Henry Ziegland thought he had dodged fate. In 1883, he broke off a relationship with his girlfriend who, out of distress, committed suicide. The girl's brother was so enraged that he hunted down Ziegland and shot him. The brother, believing he had killed Ziegland, then turned his gun on himself and took his own life. But Ziegland had not been killed. The bullet, in fact, had only grazed his face and then lodged in a tree. Ziegland surely thought himself a lucky man. Some years later, however, Ziegland decided to cut down the large tree, which still had the bullet in it. The task seemed so formidable that he decided to blow it up with a few sticks of dynamite. The explosion propelled the bullet into Ziegland's head, killing him.

James Dean's car curse
In September 1955, James Dean was killed in a horrific car accident whilst he was driving his Porsche sports car. After the crash the car was seen as very unlucky.
a) When the car was towed away from accident scene and taken to a garage, the engine slipped out and fell onto a mechanic, shattering both of his legs.
b) Eventually the engine was bought by a doctor, who put it into his racing car and was killed shortly afterwards, during a race. Another racing driver, in the same race, was killed in his car, which had James Dean's driveshaft fitted to it.
c) When James Dean's Porsche was later repaired, the garage it was in was destroyed by fire.
d) Later the car was displayed in Sacramento, but it fell off it's mount and broke a teenager's hip.
e) In Oregon, the trailer that the car was mounted on slipped from it's towbar and smashed through the front of a shop.
f) Finally, in 1959, the car mysteriously broke into 11 pieces while it was sitting on steel supports.

A falling baby, saved twice by the same man
In Detroit sometime in the 1930s, a young (if incredibly careless) mother must have been eternally grateful to a man named Joseph Figlock. As Figlock was walking down the street, the mother's baby fell from a high window onto Figlock. The baby's fall was broken and both man and baby were unharmed. A stroke of luck on its own, but a year later, the very same baby fell from the very same window onto poor, unsuspecting Joseph Figlock as he was again passing beneath. And again, they both survived the event

Take Them With You
http://coincidences.nawaz.org
My lifelong friend Jill died in 2006 after a long battle with breast cancer. My wife and I adopted her daughter after she died. Exactly one year to the day after she died, I had a very vivid dream about her. In the dream, Jill was standing outside under a tree. As I approached her, she said “Take them with you”. She looked very frightened, and she kept saying it over and over again, as if she was pleading with me – “Take them with you! Take them with you!” I didn’t know what she meant, and I asked her to explain, but she wouldn’t say anything else. Just “Take them with you.”
The next morning, Jill’s daughter Katie, who now lives with us, told me that she also had a dream about her mom that night. In her dream, Jill was standing outside her bedroom window. She was saying something to her but she couldn’t hear her through the glass. We all thought it was weird that we both had dreams about Jill that night, exactly one year after her death, but we just figured it was because we were thinking about her that day. But I was still haunted by the words “Take them with you”...what did she mean? Take who (or what) with me? Where? Why?
3 weeks later, I had forgotten all about the dreams. I had to run out to the store for some things, and as I was headed out the door I decided on a whim to take our daughters along for the ride. I wasn’t consciously thinking about the dream, I just decided to take them along just to give my wife a little peace and quiet, because she wasn’t feeling well. While we were at the store, a huge storm blew through. Then my wife called on the cell phone and said I better come home right away, because a large tree had fallen on our house. When I got home, I discovered that the tree had fallen directly on Katie’s bedroom – exactly where the two girls had been playing right before we left to go to the store.
My wife and I just looked at each other and at the same time we both whispered “Take them with you.”
Lightning strikes back
http://www.2spare.com
A British officer, Major Summerford, while fighting in the fields of Flanders in February 1918 was knocked off his horse by a flash of lightning and paralyzed from the waist down. Summerford retired and moved to Vancouver. One day in 1924, as he fished alongside a river, lightning hit the tree he was sitting under and paralyzed his right side. Two years later Summerford was sufficiently recovered that he was able to take walks in a local park. He was walking there one summer day in 1930 when a lightning bolt smashed into him, permanently paralyzing him. He died two years later. But lightning sought him out one last time. Four years later, during a storm, lightning struck a cemetery and destroyed a tombstone. The deceased buried here? Major Summerford.
Hernán Cortés
http://www.2spare.com
Hernán Cortés' arrival in Mexico in 1519 coincided with the year in the Mayan Calendar when it was predicted that the pale-faced man-god Quetzalcoatl would return to reclaim the city of Tenochtitlán. The Aztecs therefore assumed Cortés to be the legendary man-god, which assisted him in capturing the city and thence Mexico.
The Girl From Petrovka
http://www.2spare.com
The British actor Anthony Hopkins [who shot to fame as Hannibal Lecter] was delighted to hear that he had landed a leading role in a film based on the book The Girl From Petrovka by George Feifer. A few days after signing the contract, Hopkins travelled to London to buy a copy of the book. He tried several bookshops, but there wasn't one to be had. Waiting at Leicester Square underground for his train home, he noticed a book apparently discarded on a bench. Incredibly, it was The Girl From Petrovka. That in itself would have been coincidence enough but in fact it was merely the beginning of an extraordinary chain of events. Two years later, in the middle of filming in Vienna, Hopkins was visited by George Feifer, the author. Feifer mentioned that he did not have a copy of his own book. He had lent the last one - containing his own annotations - to a friend who had lost it somewhere in London. With mounting astonishment, Hopkins handed Feifer the book he had found. 'Is this the one?' he asked, 'with the notes scribbled in the margins?' It was the same book.
Umberto
http://www.2spare.com
On July 28th 1900, the King of Italy Umberto I was having dinner in a restaurant in the city of Monza. It turned out later that the restaurant's owner looked identical to the king. The restaurant owner's name was Umberto, his wife's name was the same as the queen's and the restaurant was opened on the same date as the king's inauguration. The Restaurant-owner Umberto was shot dead the next day. So was King Umberto.
German Magazine
http://www.2spare.com
In 1979, the German magazine - Das Besteran - ran a writing competition. Readers sent in unusual stories, but they had to be based on true incidents. The winner, Walter Kellner of Munich, had his story published . He wrote about a time when he was flying a Cessna 421 between Sardinia and Sicily. He encountered engine trouble at sea, landed in the water, spent some time in an emergency dinghy and was then rescued. This story was spotted by an Austrian, also named Walter Kellner, who said that the German Kellner had plagiarized the story. The Austrian Kellner said that he had flown a Cessna 421 over the same sea, experienced engine trouble and was forced to land in Sardinia. It was essentially the same story, with a slightly different ending. The magazine checked both stories, and both turned out to be true, even though they were nearly identical.
Oregon Lottery
http://www.2spare.com
Oregon's Columbian newspaper announced the winning Pick 4 lottery numbers for June 28, 2000 in advance. The newspaper had intended to print the previous set of winning numbers but erroneously printed those for the state of Virginia, namely 6-8-5-5. In the next Oregon lottery, those same numbers were drawn.
Mark Twain
http://www.2spare.com
Mark Twain was born on the day of the appearance of Halley's Comet in 1835, and died on the day of its next appearance in 1910. He himself predicted this in 1909, when he said: "I came in with Halley's Comet in 1835. It is coming again next year, and I expect to go out with it."
Giant ice penis - is climate change to blame?
The cockberg was photographed by Andy Rouse* in the Bransfield Strait near Antarctica.
Experts now believe** that it is only a matter of time before an armada of penis-shaped chunks begin to break off the Antarctic ice floes, and then roam the oceans wreaking havoc and luring sailors to their doom.
* We were sceptical of this name. Andy Rouse? A Rouse? Arouse? But he is real, it turns out, and takes very many nice pictures, most of which aren't penis-related in any way.
** No they don't.

YouTube guy
I was watching some videos on YouTube, mostly in the vein of indie rock and electronic. I heard of a band called Battles, which had some members from Helmet, a band that I grew up with. I got familiar with the band and realized that it was right where I was at as far as my taste in music went. I stumbled upon a very recent YouTube video of Battles in Shanghai. It looked like an amazing show, and as I kept watching I noticed something odd.
Amidst the crowd of Chinese fans there was a HUGE person towering over them. I thought that I noticed the guy, but just continued watching. After the camera zoomed in a little bit my jaw hit the floor. The inhumanly tall person standing a head above the crowd was my ex roommate. I later learned that his girlfriend lived in China and that he’d gone to see them and brought his new roommate a drumstick as well as the sign from the concert. Amazing when you see people you know across the world on a YouTub video.
Refrigerators on the Street
It turns out that the guy was a contractor who had been designated the job of selling these fridges to people just like me. I got a brand new full size fridge for $50 less than what I was prepared to pay at Costco. He even brought it to the office and installed it free of charge. By the next day, the refrigerators were all gone and there had it was if it had never happened. The fridge still works wonderfully to this day and not since have I seen anybody undertaking the strange task of selling refrigerators out of their front yard. I guess I just have good timing.
