Bull Shark
I was swimming in the Pacific Ocean with my cousin and sister, my cousin and sister were both younger and my cousin had never swam in the ocean. I'd heard many horror stories of shark attacks, but I wasn't worried at all, I figured I had a better chance of being struck by lightning (which I also have been) than experiencing a shark attack, so I wasn't worried.
We were pretty far out, swimming, enjoying the beautiful weather. My sister was out in front of me and I all of a sudden she began bolting for the shore. I cried out to her asking what was wrong, but she was not responding, simply swimming as hard as she could toward shore.
I immediately looked down, and about ten feet below the water all I was was an open mouth full of teeth directly under me. The first thought that entered my mind was "this is it, it's the end of me". Adrenaline kicked in and I began swimming as fast as I could toward shore. My mind went blank, all I could think about was getting out of the water.
Upon reaching shore, I realized that I still had all of my limbs and I wasn't bleeding. Disbelief washed over me and as I tried to fathom why the shark hadn't struck. I'd watched shark week on the Discovery Channel countless times and knew that Bull Sharks attacked straight up from underneath just as I had seen in the water. Astonished I began to peer out to the location where I thought my grave should have been.
What had happened is that the ten foot long Bull Shark had gotten tangled in a buoy and died in such a manner that it was pointing toward the surface with its mouth wide open. It was single handedly the scariest moment in my entire life. I've been in the ocean since, but have always been haunted by the memory. My cousin still hasn't heard the story to this day....
